Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold; for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. ~Proverbs 8:10-11
I recently received a promotional email with the headline, “Thoughtful Ways to Share Your Wealth and Legacy,”. This caught my attention. The article focused on financial planning strategies families can use to help loved ones reach major milestones, such as paying for college or buying a home. But it made me think about something deeper: the quiet, lasting ways we care for the people we love—not only by helping them financially, but by sharing the lessons, values, and stories that have shaped our own lives.
A monetary gift can open a door, ease a burden, or help make a dream possible. But I believe its greatest value comes when it is offered with love, guidance, and a piece of our own story. When we share the memories behind our first major purchases—whether it was a car, a home, or another meaningful step—we give our children and grandchildren more than advice. We give them a glimpse of who we were, what we struggled with, and what we learned along the way. Those stories can become anchors for them. They help explain not only the decisions we made, but the hopes, uncertainties, mistakes, and moments of courage behind those decisions.
It is easy to think of legacy only in terms of wealth or the physical things we leave behind. But to me, legacy is also the part of ourselves that remains in the hearts and minds of the people we love. It is the wisdom we earned through living, the values we tried to practice, and the stories that remind future generations that they are part of something larger than themselves.
When we share that part of ourselves, our children and grandchildren receive more than guidance. They receive a sense of belonging. They come to understand where they come from, what mattered to us, and how love, faith, perseverance, sacrifice, and everyday choices helped shape the family they now carry forward.
