Cherished Moments with My Grandfather

Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation. ~Joel 1:3

I was blessed to grow up in the apartment below my maternal grandparents. I remember many summer evenings sitting beside my grandfather on the front stoop, watching and greeting passersby while sharing the events of our day. When I was young, I filled much of the conversation with lively chatter as my grandfather laughed. As I grew older, our conversations deepened. In his broken English, he shared beautiful stories from his life. He had been a fisherman and farmer before becoming a laborer after immigrating to the United States in the 1920s. Although he had no formal education, his life experiences gave him knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, which he shared with me so patiently during those unforgettable moments on the front stoop. If only I had been able to capture those conversations, I’m sure his pearls of wisdom would have helped me through many parenting dilemmas. More importantly, I would have preserved his life legacy to share with my children and generations to follow.
